The Spit, Surfers Paradise
Where is the best “learn to surf beach” on the Gold Coast? The local’s favourite, Spit Beach. Get Wet Surf School has been licensed to operate since 2005 at the Gold Coast’s favourite local learn to surf beach, The Spit.
Voted by Tourism Australia in 2021 as the third best beach in Australia, The Spit is one of the most highly regarded locations on the Gold Coast, referred to as the Gold Coast’s “Central Park”. Locals are so passionate about this area they have been fighting off developers for decades and in 2019 Get Wet Surf School’s owner Kerri worked with the Queensland Government Spit Master Plan committee to ensure that no development would be allowed beyond Sea World.

A Locals’ Surfing Paradise
The Spit is the gateway to the Gold Coast’s spectacular waterways, with over 450 species of marine life in the Seaway, most divers consider it the best shore dive in Australia. The Spit has approximately 30ha of parkland for picnics and Federation Walk Coastal Reserve offers over 93ha of beautiful coastal bush walking tracks. The Marine Stadium is a still water safe haven for boaties and a perfect place to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding or Kayaking.
But the jewel in the crown of The Spit is its magnificent beach, only an 8 minute drive from the heart of the bustling city of Surfers Paradise, The Spit Beach is the true locals surfing paradise. No crowds, no high-rises shadowing the beach, no traffic and loads of free parking.
The Spit Beach is where you will find local mums and dads surfing with their children as it’s the safest place to learn how to surf.
Perfect Waves
With strong northerly sweeps along the open beaches of the tourist strip, sand is pushed along the beach and due to the manmade rock wall of the Seaway, the sand that is not pumped up from the Jetty and released on the other side of the Seaway gathers to form perfect sand banks. Big green waves break beyond these sand banks and roll softly to the shore in waist deep water, this makes learning to surf at the Spit Beach consistently easier than the open beaches with strong currents and shore dumps, safe even for those who are not strong swimmers.
The beach between the rock wall and the Sand Pumping Jetty is the Gold Coast’s only non-bathing reserve, this means that there are no crowds swimming in the waves so we have loads of beach to pick the perfect spot for each lesson. For swimmers, the bathing area is just south of the Jetty.
