What Level Surfer Am I?
Learn to communicate your level surfing
Knowing your current surf level helps us tailor your coaching experience to suit your ability and goals. It ensures you’ll be learning alongside others at the same stage in their surf journey.
WHy does it matter?
Once you have tried the beginner introduction surf lesson and/or surfed a few times you might begin thinking about intermediate lessons.
While “intermediate” can mean anything from your second surf session to two decades of experience, our Level 1 to 3 system makes things clearer. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you figure out where you sit:
Level 1 – White Water Fundamentals
Perfect for first-timers or surfers still getting the basics down. You’ll stay in the safe, shallow white water while you:
- Learn how to select and catch waves unassisted
- Understand how to stall and accelerate the board
- Handling of the board
- Work on your functional stance to support your progression into unbroken waves
Level 2 – Green Wave Progression
You’re standing confidently and starting to paddle out the back. You’ll focus on:
- Catching unbroken waves
- Paddling through white water safely and efficiently
- Wave selection
- Agility, positioning, and etiquette
- Handling yourself confidently in varied surf conditions
Level 3 – Performance Surfing
You can consistently catch waves up to head high without assistance. This is where the coaching gets more technical—and mostly video-based. You’ll focus on:
- Finding and holding the fastest trimming line
- Angle take-offs and generate speed down the line
- Performing controlled, horizontal carving turns
Please note: If you think you’re a Level 3 surfer, get in touch with us directly before booking. These sessions are more specialised and may not be available every week.
Let us know your level when booking, and we’ll make sure you’re placed in the right group to maximise your time in the water.
Private Lessons
After reaching this level you will want to transition onto a fibreglass surfboard. We have a selection of different “glass” boards that can be used in a private surf lesson. You and your instructor can start to work out what will be the best surfboard for you and they can help point you in the right direction to find your first fibreglass surfboard.
If joining a group doesn’t suit your schedule you can fast track your surf skills by doing private surfing lessons with us. With a private surf lesson you have the instructor by your side coaching you for as many surfing lessons as it takes to get you on track and confident.
Learning to surf is just like any sport, the more you practice the better you get and the better you get, the more you will love it. Surfing is a wonderful sport that encourages a healthy outdoor lifestyle for all ages and is perfect for families and groups of friends.
